Dr Strange and the Multiverse of Madness – Interview with Director Sam Raimi

Sam Raimi is one of the greats.

His stint directing the iconic Tobey Maguire Spider-Man films cemented the look and the feel of superhero movies across the board, but he also blew the doors off the industry when he made the Evil Dead trilogy. His unique approach to filmmaking breathed new life into genres thought dead.

So when he was announced as the director of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, I knew something wonderful was about to happen. Raimi has a kind of fast, fresh, cheesy and earnest view of the worlds his films take place in. The reason the MCU works so well is because of its relentless optimism in the face of overwhelming odds – there’s a distinct lack of grimdark nonsense.

So why not bring on board the pioneer who had a bunch of New Yorkers pass a wounded Peter Parker his mask back?

I sat down with the man himself to talk about his hiatus from filmmaking, and why he returned to create the latest installment in the MCU.

Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness lands in cinemas on the 5th of May.
