You can’t aim-down-sights in Disintegration

Disintegration is a new sci-fi shooter from V1 Interactive. The development team is being led by co-creator of Halo, Marcus Lehto. Players control a Gravcycle pilot named Romer Shoal in single-player and a non-descript pilot in multiplayer. In the world of Disintegration, Gravcycle pilots lead their squads and so, in gameplay terms, players direct a group of three units in addition to controlling their character.

As the Gravcycle hovers, players are able to control their elevation by pressing L1 to rise and L2 to descend. R1 directs their units and R2 fires. Due to the nature of the controls and the player’s position on top of their Gravcycle, you can’t aim-down-sights (ADS) in Disintegration.

By pressing R3, you can zoom in somewhat but it doesn’t function in the same way as ADS does in other shooters. The lack of ADS had me feeling very uncomfortable when I started playing Disintegration’s beta.

Disintegration

The lack of ADS and the slower speed at which Disintegration plays makes it feel like a very different kind of shooter than those we’re used to playing today. It feels decidedly ‘old-school’ and seems to have more in common with a game like Descent than with Halo.

After the initial shock of no ADS wears off and you start to learn how the game works and how to play, it doesn’t seem like such a glaring omission. That being said, it still feels odd that it’s not included and definitely makes Disintegration stand out.

Whether or not that’s a positive remains to be seen.

For now, you can enjoy the closed technical which beta will take place on January 28 and January 29, 2020. Following the closed Disintegration beta an open beta will take place from January 31 through February 1.

It launches for PC, PS4 and Xbox One in 2020.
