Octopath Traveler rated M in Australia for Moderate Impact Sex and Violence

The Nintendo Switch exclusive RPG Octopath Traveler has been classified in Australia. It has been rated M for moderate impact Sex, Themes and Violence and mild impact Language.

Octopath Traveler is presented in a 2D-HD format with sprites exploring 3D, textured environments. With a visual theme that features sprites and the overall aesthetic, it’s a little strange to see it rated so highly for Sex and Violence.

The Australian Classification lists Octopath Traveler as a multi-platform title, however, it does so with all Switch titles. It appears to simply be that the Classification Board doesn’t have a separate listing for Nintendo’s platform.

While it’s not unusual for RPGs to deal with heavier subjects the visuals of Octopath Traveler really don’t seem to lend themselves to Sex and Violence. No more than you’d find in a cartoon.

Sure, there may be overt references to sex through the game’s dialogue and there may be characters discussing both sex and violence, but it’s still a little strange.

We do know that Octopath Traveler will feature eight controllable characters that each have a special command to use while speaking with NPCs. Perhaps one or more of these is the root of these moderate impacts.

Octopath Traveler is also a turn-based RPG that will take players back to the glory days of SNES and PS1 JRPGs.

Octopath Traveler is launching for Switch on July 13, 2018 and a free demo is available now on the eShop.
