How Do You Upgrade BD-1 in Jedi Fallen Order?

The long wait is over. You can finally play Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order and see the fruits of Respawn’s labour. You can read our extensive review here and see what our resident Star Wars expert, James, thought of the game. Fallen Order tells the story of Cal Kestis, a Padawan hiding from the Empire in the wake of Order 66.

The game takes place across a number of planets in the Star Wars canon and features Dark Souls-lite combat, Uncharted and Tomb Raider style exploration and some light Metroidvania mechanics.

Cal is accompanied on his journey by BD-1. Also known as the best droid in Star Wars history. He’s like a combination of BB-8 and Wall-E and he’s simply the best.

Getting around the game means relying on some of BD-1’s abilities. There are lots of collectibles and items that are also inaccessible without upgrading BD-1.

So, how do you upgrade BD-1?

Jedi Fallen Order

Scattered throughout the levels are workbenches that Cal can use to customise his lightsaber. However, at certain points in the game, when you access some new workbenches for the first time, you’ll unlock a brand new upgrade for BD-1.

BD-1 first unlocks his ability to display the Holo-Map and use Stims on Bogano without a workbench. They’re unlocked just by playing. After that, you’ll need to track down workbenches to progress.

The workbenches and upgrades are hard to miss and you won’t be able to continue the story without them, so don’t worry about missing them. If you’re frustrated that you aren’t able to unlock certain doors or open certain areas, be patient. You’ll get the right ability in time.

BD-1 abilities are;

  • Scomp Link – Slice Imperial Tech
  • Overcharge – Overcharge special panels
  • Powered Zipline – Travel up ziplines
  • Slice: Probe Droid – Slice Probe Droids to make them your ally
  • Slice: Security Droid – Slice Security Droids to make them your ally

You’ll have to be patient in unlocking and accessing everything when it comes to BD-1. But come on, he’s pretty damn cute.

Jedi Fallen Order is now available for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
