Vampyr combat looks like a mix of Dark Souls and Arkham

DONTNOD and Focus Home Interactive have released a brand-new trailer for Vampyr which focuses on the game’s combat.

In Vampyr, players step into the shoes of Dr. Jonathan Reid as he battles to control his desire to feed and his will to protect the innocent. According to DONTNOD

By sacrificing the very citizens Reid swore to protect, players will learn and evolve powerful vampire abilities in their struggle to defeat London’s deadly foes.

Sacrificing civilians obviously comes at a cost, but Reid is able to determine if the cost is too high.

Reid is able to use his vampiric powers to investigate the lives of London’s civilians and determine if they deserve to die.

Reid can simply give in to his hunger and treat the mortals as blood bags. Either way, killing certain citizens will have a greater impact on the local ecosystem than others, while simply killing too many may cause an entire district to collapse

After Reid has fed, he’s able to evolve and learn new abilities to use in combat. Reid can quickly cross distances with his ‘blink’ ability or hurl a Bloodspear from a distance to cause massive damage.

Two other abilities detailed by DONTNOD include Abyss which releases Reid’s inner shadows and Rage “targets and strikes entire groups of enemies with a terrible fury.”

In the trailer, we get a great look at Vampyr combat. Looking like a combination of Dark Souls and Batman: Arkham, combat looks like it will require players to consider actions and plan out their attacks.

We also get a look at some of Reid’s special abilities and his internal struggle between feeding and saving lives.

Vampyr is launching on June 5 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
