Breath of the Wild is the best selling Zelda game of all time

As part of Nintendo’s financial results for 2018 the lifetime sales for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild have been revealed. Officially, the Breath of the Wild sales places it at the top of the entire franchise.

With over 8 million copies sold on Switch alone and another 1.5 million copies sold on Wii U, Breath of the Wild is the best selling Zelda game of all time.

The previous entry in the series, Skyward Sword, is the worst selling game of the franchise, so it’s a massive recovery for Breath of the Wild to have become the best selling.

Breath of the Wild Sales

We know that in Nintendo’s previous quarter financial resultsBreath of the Wild sales topped 7.5 million with Switch and Wii U sales combined.

Sell-through for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, released in March of last year, has reached 6 million units for the Nintendo Switch version alone, and 7.5 million units total when you include the Wii U version, released at the same time. The game has received accolades from game media and consumers around the world and has won a variety of awards as the best game of 2017.

In the most recent quarter, Breath of the Wild has sold an additional 3 million units to bring its total to 8.5 million worldwide on Switch and 10 million with the Wii U sales included.

The next best selling games in the series are Twilight Princess and  Ocarina of Time

With the sales of Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey reaching over 10 million and the Switch selling nearly 18 million units, it’s clear that Nintendo is onto a winning streak.

Once Smash Bros and Pokemon Switch are released, it’s likely that even more hardware and software units will be sold than expected.

This is fantastic news for Nintendo and Nintendo fans.
