Sydney FC in strong position to defend E-League title

The E-League season has kicked off for 2020, and Sydney FC is on track to win its third E-League title in as many seasons, with the first matchday bringing six rounds of thrilling action to a close. Sydney remains the only undefeated team in the league, sitting clear on top with 16 points.

Wellington Phoenix, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City trail on 12 points, but only Melbourne Victory has had its bye round, putting them in the box seat for outright second.

The third season of the competition introduced a new format, where instead of playing one round over 11 weeks, two matchdays will host the 11 rounds.

E-League 2020

Round 1

Round 1 saw winning starts to two-time defending champions Sydney FC, while Marcus Gomes got the edge over Perth Glory to hand defeat to his younger brother Dillon, who made his competitive E-League debut today.

Elsewhere, Adelaide United edged out Western Sydney Wanderers 5-4 across two legs, while Brisbane Roar and Melbourne Victory were also victorious.

Round 2

With 11 teams now participating in the E-League, the new team Western United had to wait until the second round to get its campaign underway, in a thrilling 4-4 draw against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Sydney FC and Melbourne City continued their strong starts with another win, defeating Brisbane and Newcastle respectively. Only Melbourne Victory, who faced the bye in Round 2, retained a 100% win record.

Round 3

It was bragging rights for Melbourne Victory against rivals Melbourne City, who were victorious 4-1 across the two legs. New signing Rick Tran, who moved from Adelaide United last season, defeated City’s Saisanas 2-0, while Mo Zwed also overcame Marcus Gomes 2-1 to take all three points.

The F3 Derby ended up as a 4-4 draw, with Central Coast player Kyren winning his match over Akpo, with Newcastle’s Fweshest earning a 2-1 win to take a share of the points.

Sydney FC also went three from three with a triumph over Adelaide United.

Round 4

Western United claimed its first win with a 3-2 result against Adelaide United, thanks to N8_Cenk picking up a 2-0 win on PS4.

Big wins for Brisbane Roar and Wellington Phoenix propped them up the table, and Sydney FC managed to take all three points over Melbourne City in a tough encounter.

Round 5

Adelaide United recorded the biggest aggregate score of the season, with a dominant 7-0 showing against Central Coast.

Melbourne Victory dropped points for the first time this season, losing 3-2 to the Wanderers, as Sydney FC extended its lead overall with a 6-1 win over Perth Glory.

Round 6

A 2-1 win to Newcastle Jets Xbox player Akpo helped his team seal a 2-2 draw against Sydney FC, ending a run of five straight wins.

Adelaide United crashed back to earth after its big win the previous round, losing 6-1 to Brisbane Roar.

The remaining five rounds will be held next month, on Saturday, March 7, with the competition finals taking place in May, live at the brand new Fortress Melbourne esports arena.

The finals will also offer 450 Global Series points, to allow individuals to qualify for the FIFA eWorld Cup.
