Yoshida – “We would love to be able to expand data centres to Australia” for Final Fantasy 14

While in attendance at the Final Fantasy 14 Shadowbringers preview event in London, I was given an overview of the content coming to the MMO. In addition, I had the opportunity to speak with the Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida.

When asked about Australia, Australian fans of Final Fantasy 14 and the possibility of Final Fantasy 14 Australian servers, Yoshida said;

We do see that there are a lot of passionate players in Australia and we do understand that the latency is still kind of an issue in that region, but we still continue to see people continuing to play despite the fact that those latency issues exist.

He added that Square Enix would love to expand their data centres to Australia and that there are ongoing discussions about it.

Final Fantasy 14 Australian Servers

When discussing Final Fantasy 14 and the possibility of Australian servers Yoshida said “We do feel that the Australia region is a very important area that we want to capture so that we can have more players coming in. We actually have been researching the internet infrastructure.”

Yoshida mentioned researching underwater communications cables in Sydney and said he would continue to look into them in the hopes that they become available for public use. If they do, he and Square Enix would look into whether an Australian Final Fantasy 14 server and data centre would work well in Sydney.

If a Final Fantasy 14 server in Sydney is feasible, Yoshida explained that it will open up significant opportunities for the game.

It will allow for us to consider locations like Singapore so that we can place it there and accommodate for A and Z region as well as open it up to East Asia regions as well.

So I think we still want that.

Finally, Yoshida said that the official forums are open and it’s a great way to get feedback to the team. He also asked for fans to petition the Australian Government to let Square Enix use the infrastructure so he can build Final Fantasy 14’s Australian servers.

Fingers crossed that we have more information on Final Fantasy 14 Australian servers soon.
