Randy Pitchford claims Troy Baker turned down the role of Rhys in Borderlands 3

At Supernova Melbourne this past weekend, a fan asked Troy Baker if he would be returning to voice Rhys in Borderlands 3. Baker said that he wasn’t returning to the character and said;

 I don’t agree with [Gearbox] on how they’re handling it…I really want Gearbox to know that if they’re going to bring back characters from Tales From The Borderlands it should be the people who originated the characters. They shouldn’t just recast willy-nilly, because as a fan that matters to me.

If I had turned it down flatly, we wouldn’t be having this conversation

Prior to the panel at Supernova, Baker had taken to Twitter to respond to another fan’s question about the VA for Rhys in Borderlands 3

However, Gearbox CEO and President, Randy Pitchford has a different view of events and tweeted the following response to a fan.

On one hand, you have Baker, saying that he would have loved to have reprised his role and on the other you have Gearbox saying he turned it down. We’re not sure who to believe in this instance, but one thing is certain, Troy Baker won’t be voicing Rhys in Borderlands 3.

As for Pitchford’s comment about “with how Rhys appears in the game, I don’t think it actually matters at all,” we’re wondering if the character will appear only briefly or in a manner that means he doesn’t speak or has a different voice due to plotting.

We’ll just have to wait and find out.

Borderlands 3 is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on September 13, 2019.
