Borderlands 3 on PC is a timed exclusive on the Epic Games Store (EGS)

2K and Gearbox have revealed today that Borderlands 3 will be exclusive on the Epic Games Store (EGS) for PC.

At least initially.

When Borderlands 3 is released in September 2019 it will launch at retail for PS4 and Xbox One, but will only be available through the Epic Games Store (EGS) for PC. 2K President David Ismailer said, “The PC gaming community has been an important part of the success of the Borderlands series, and we are excited to be partnering with Epic who recognize its worldwide popularity and share in our commitment to bring Borderlands 3 to this rapidly expanding audience.”

On the Borderlands subreddit a post titled “I will not be buying the game on Epic games’ store” has received 9.3K upvotes. This puts the thread in second place for most upvotes of all time in the subreddit, only 700 upvotes behind the official trailer released at PAX East.

Borderlands 3 Epic Games Store (EGS)

In the Reddit thread, user Greenzoid2 explains their reasons for not wanting to use the Epic Games Store. Here are a few that are listed in the thread.

  • The launcher has terrible security. I have 2 friends who literally are notified multiple times A WEEK that there have been attempts to log in to their account. This is by far my biggest worry. My credit card is not going anywhere near EGS. Epic has not been helpful at all either which leads to the next point.
  • Awful and basically non-existent customer support. It’s so bad.
  • No social features like steam chat.
  • No cloud saves
  • No controller support
  • No achievements

Greenzoid2 lists many more reasons in their thread with many other commenters agreeing. There are also a lot of comments discussing how the poster was planning on getting Borderlands 3 on PC but due to the Epic Games Store (EGS) exclusivity, will be purchasing the game on a console instead.

There have been plenty of examples of these kinds of “boycotts” in the past and more often than not, it turns out that fans still buy the game regardless.

Regarding the Epic Games Store, Ismailer went on to say;

Our mission, in addition to delivering the most engaging and captivating entertainment experiences, is to embrace new distribution platforms that will contribute to our effort to grow the audience for Borderlands 3.

For those who stick to their (billion) guns, Borderlands 3 will become available to purchase from other digital PC storefronts from April 2020. If you’re so opposed to the Epic Games Store, can you wait six months before you buy Borderlands 3?

It will be available for PS4, Xbox One and PC via the Epic Games Store from September 13, 2019.
