New Splatoon 2 Salmon Run Gear coming courtesy of JAMSTEC

Nintendo has teamed up with JAMSTEC (the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology) to bring a brand new hat to Splatoon 2 with Salmon Run this month.

JAMSTEC is a scientific organisation, that works to improve understanding of life in the oceans and on Earth. The organisation also works to advance academic research.

With JAMSTEC’s focus on marine life, it is a perfect fit to partner with Splatoon 2.

Splatoon 2 JAMSTEC

Available in Salmon Run this month is the Oceanic Hard Hat, which is an in-game recreation of the hat worn by JAMSTEC staff every day. JAMSTEC also owns and operates a submersible named Shinkai 6500.

The manned submersible can dive to a depth of 6,500 metres and was completed in 1990. The Autobomb sub-weapon in Splatoon 2 took some visual inspiration from the Shinkai 6500.

The Shinkai 6500 will even appear in the upcoming Octo Expansion DLC. Finally, in the Manta Maria battle stage, a scientific drilling machine can be seen at sea.

The vessel is named Chikyu which means ‘The Earth’ in Japanese. Chikyu can drill to a depth of three Mt Fuji’s combined. Chikyu’s mission is to uncover mysteries of the Earth and it gets closer every day. Chikyu is part of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP).

Splatoon 2 is available now.
