Rare reveals its planned Sea of Thieves content

Sea of Thieves was released just over three weeks ago. It’s a bold, exciting game, but at the moment there’s not a lot to do. Thankfully, Rare has revealed its planned Sea of Thieves content over the coming weeks.

In my review of Sea of Thieves, I wrote, “It has its problems, but the core experience is so good, and the future is so bright, I can overlook the current shortcomings.”

I stand by that. Sea of Thieves is great, it just needs more for players to do. And it looks like Rare has us covered.

Sea of Thieves content plans

In a blog post on the Sea of Thieves site, Executive Producer Joe Neate details the planned content for the title. Neate says there are five factors to consider when adding content to Sea of Thieves. They are;

  • Bringing players together in interesting ways, encouraging different types of player encounters
  • Enriching the world that players adventure in
  • Giving players new ways to play
  • Giving players a variety of goals and rewards
  • Broadening the journey to Pirate Legend and beyond

As April continues, Rare will work on addressing player concerns, but Neate claims that “as we move into May, our focus will shift to new content.”

The first batch of new content will be The Hungering Deep. In this new content, a brand-new AI threat will enter the world. Neate says, “Crews will have to work together to discover and defeat this threat as part of a unique event. ”

The Hungering Deep

The Hungering Deep will add all-new game mechanics that will help players defeat this threat. There will also be brand-new rewards introduced to Sea of Thieves as part of The Hungering Deep.

Also coming in May will be weekly events. Players will see new mechanics introduced and Neate says “fun new ways to play with weekly events and rewards.”

Following The Hungering Deep, Rare will release Cursed Sailes and Forsaken Shores.

Cursed Sails will introduce a new ship type and Forsaken Shores will expand Sea of Thieves map, giving players more of the world to explore. Like The Hungering Deep, both Cursed Sails and Forsaken Shores will introduce new mechanics and rewards.

Each of the three updates will be provided free of charge to all players.

Finally, Neate says in the blog post that based on player feedback, both  Pets and Ship Captaincy have been put on the backburner.

Sea of Thieves is available now for PC and Xbox One.
