Hellblade has been nominated for nine BAFTAs

The BAFTA nominations for 2018 have been announced and have seen Hellblade nominated for nine BAFTAs. Developed by Ninja Theory, Hellblade was developed by a small team, but with an AAA frame of mind.

Set in the 8th Century, Hellblade stars Senua as she quests to save her dead lover. Plagued by visions and hallucinations, Senua is experiencing a psychotic episode and players share the experience throughout.

Hellblade is an extraordinary achievement for a number of reasons. It managed to look, feel and play like an AAA title, while still remaining wholly independent.

Even more impressive were the lengths Ninja Theory went to, to accurately portray psychosis and the experiences of someone suffering from mental illness.

Hellblade Nominated for Nine BAFTAs

With Hellblade nominated for nine BAFTAs, it’s certainly a sign of it being well received. The nine nominations it received are;

  • Best Game
  • British Game
  • Artistic Achievement
  • Audio Achievement
  • Performer (Melina Juergens as Senua)
  • Narrative
  • Music
  • Game Innovation
  • Game Beyond Entertainment

The field of nominees is especially strong this year with Hellblade going up against the likes of Cuphead, Horizon: Zero Dawn, Breath of the Wild, and Super Mario Odyssey.

Hellblade was recently re-classified in Australia, suggesting it may be getting a release on Xbox One.

It was also an incredible success for Ninja Theory, selling 500,000 copies and turning a profit in just three months.

Hellblade is available now for PC and PS4. We wish Ninja Theory all the best at the BAFTAs, which will be held on April 12.
