Melbourne Term 1 School Holidays 2025: Josephine Wants to Dance

Just in time for school holidays in Melbourne, Monkey Baa Theatre Company has announced the return of Josephine Wants to Dance at The Ian Potter Centre for Performing Arts. Josephine Wants to Dance is a musical based on the book of the same name by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley.

The book and musical are about believing in yourself and always following your dreams. The production is “a hilarious musical about self-discovery, ballet, hip-hop and a kangaroo called Josephine who dreams of dancing. Despite the protests of her little brother Joey that “kangaroos don’t dance, they hop”, Josephine dreams she too can plie, pirouette, fouettés and jetés!,” per Monkey Baa Theatre Company.

Josephine Wants to Dance

In Josephine Wants to Dance, a ballet troupe comes to Shaggy Gully, and Josephine wants to be a ballerina like those in the troupe. She wants to wear a pink tutu and silk ballet shoes, and suddenly she’s at the centre of the show.

For these performances of Josephine wants to Dance, Monkey Baa Theatre’s team includes Director, Jonathan Biggins (Pete the Sheep, The Wharf Revue); Composer: Phil Scott (Pete the Sheep, The Wharf Revue); Choreographer, Tim Harbour (formerly of The Australian Ballet); Set and Costume Designer, James Browne (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) and Lighting Designer, Emma Lockhart‐Wilson (Where the Streets Had a Name).

Director Jonathan Biggins said of the show, “Talent comes in all shapes and sizes, why not have a gifted kangaroo playing a dying swan? The production brings Australian animals to life in the most imaginative way possible. Josephine herself was inspired by a real kangaroo named Fuschia, who lived near Jackie French’s home in the bush.”

Following successful shows at the Sydney Opera House, Josephine Wants to Dance will be presented at the Alexander Theatre on 11-12 April 2025. Performances will take place as follows;
