Australians now have access to Niantic & Nintendo’s Pikmin-based mobile app

Niantic and Nintendo have announced today that Australia is the second region in the world to gain access to the new, jointly developed Pikmin-themed app. This new Pikmin-themed app is the first title Nintendo and Niantic are co-developing and is scheduled to release globally in 2021.

The new app is based on the Pikmin franchise and will include “gameplay activities designed to encourage walking and make the activity more enjoyable.”

While the global launch is some ways off, Australians are fortunate to be able to gain access to the app from today. Like Pokémon GO, Aussies are getting access before many other regions, which must mean Niantic has a soft spot for the land Down Under.

Pikmin Mobile App

Pokémon GO was released in 2016 and was developed by Niantic. Since release, it has grown into a global phenomenon with 147 million active users in 2018 and global revenue of 6 Billion USD as of 2020.

Pikmin doesn’t have the same level of fandom or brand recognition as Pokémon, but Nintendo fans are nothing if not loyal, so it’s likely players will flock to the new app.

If you’re keen to check out the new Pikmin-themed app, head to the official website to sign up. Vooks is reporting its readers have already started receiving early access emails across both iOS and Android as of today.
