Gaige is not playable in Borderlands 3 DLC

Borderlands fans will recognise Gaige from Borderlands 2. Gaige was added to the game post-launch and is the fifth playable class; Mechromancer. While playable in Borderlands 2, Gaige appeared as an NPC in The Pre-Sequel and, up until now, has not appeared in Borderlands 3. That’s all about to change in Guns, Love & Tentacles — Borderlands 3’s second DLC — as Gaige appears as Wainright and Hammerlock’s wedding planner.

Also returning to Borderlands 3 with Gaige is her robot BBF Deathtrap. In Borderlands 2, Gaige’s Action Skill was to unleash Deathtrap onto the battlefield for 60 seconds. However, since she’s not playable in Borderlands 3, not its DLC, both Gaige and Deathtrap will instead operate as quest givers.

That being said, Anthony Nicholson, Gearbox’s Head of DLC Production, assures me that players will get to spend plenty of time with Gaige and Deathtrap in this new DLC.

Borderlands 3 Gaige and Deathtrap

“She’s more of your mission giver and guide type of NPC,” Nicholson explained. “She’s with you and along for the whole ride. She’s a part of this party that’s there. You’ll get to hang out with Wainwright and Hammerlock obviously but also Gaige, Claptrap and Deathtrap.”

Fans might be disappointed to learn that Gaige is being added to Borderlands 3 as DLC but only as an NPC, especially since she was added as a playable DLC character in the past. However, Nicholson told me that fans will learn about what’s been happening to Gaige, though it’s not the focus of the DLC.

The focus is on what’s happening with Wainright, Hammerlock and the debacle that ensues. But, you’ll learn a bit about what Gaige has been going through.

Sadly, Gaige won’t join the crew of the Sanctuary III either as Nicholson confirmed that she’s confined to the DLC.

The original voice actor for Gaige — Cherami Leigh — is returning in Borderlands 3 to reprise her role. Gearbox confirmed that she was voicing Gaige in the DLC during our interview. This is welcome news as both Claptrap and Rhys have been recast in Borderlands 3.

Guns, Love & Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainright and Hammerlock is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on March 26, 2020.
