Frozenbyte has no plans for cross-platform play in Trine 4

Both Trine 4 and Ultimate Collection are coming to PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One early next month. As it’s a co-op, platformer and being released on so many platforms, we wondered whether it might join the ranks of cross-platform games like Fortnite, Rocket League and even Modern Warfare.

Unfortunately, it seems as if the answer is no.

Speaking to Kai Tuovinen, Marketing Manager at Frozenbyte, we asked about the potential for Trine 4 cross-platform play.

Trine 4 Cross-Platform

Tuovinen told us that “it’s something we’ve always wanted to do” but that there are no plans to support cross-platform play for Trine 4 “at this point.” While Frozenbyte may like the idea of cross-platform play, Tuovinen told us that it hasn’t “had the chance to investigate properly, so we don’t want to promise anything we can’t deliver yet.”

Which makes sense. It’s better to leave something unannounced rather than over promise and under deliver. It’s a bit of a shame that it won’t be available at launch though.

Trine 4 is a prime candidate for cross-platform play, given that it’s co-op instead of competitive. The slower, puzzle-based gameplay would also suit cross-platform play really well as it wouldn’t unfairly impinge players with a slower connection.

Hopefully, something will be announced in the future. For now, there won’t be any cross-platform play.

Trine 4 will be available on PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One on October 8, 2019.
