Borderlands 3 – Who are the Calypso Twins?

During the Borderlands 3 gameplay reveal in Los Angeles, California, Gearbox gave us some more information on the leaders of the Children of the Vault; The Calypso Twins. These siblings are the primary antagonists in Borderlands 3 and have been shrouded in mystery.

However, following hands-on with Borderlands 3 and the presentation by Gearbox we now know a little more about The Calypso Twins.

It was speculated that Tyreen was a Siren and this has now been confirmed. She has the ability to leech life from others and plans to travel to the Vaults all over the galaxy to leech the life from the Vault bosses.

Borderlands 3 The Calypso Twins

According to Gearbox and Randy Pitchford, The Calypso Twins are the Borderlands 3 universe’s ultimate douchey streamers. They have super-fans and they broadcast themselves constantly to gain new followers i.e. Bandits.

The conversations they have with the player are all led by Tyreen. In fact, during the preview event, we only got to hear Troy speak once. It looks like Tyreen is number one when it comes to the twins.

It has been speculated that Troy may also be a Siren. However, nothing we saw during the presentation or our hands-on time gives us any more information about him.

There is a nugget of information that we can glean from Tyreen during our visit to Promethea that may hint at a massive plot development though.

Potential Spoilers follow

When we first land on Promethea, Tyreen contacts the player and says;

Heya super-fan! You finally made it. We’ve been here for ages.

Oh! Thanks Lillith for the cool powers. This Firehawk thing rules!

Have fun. Bye!

We know that Tyreen can leech life from others and so it is strongly implied here that she leeched Lillith in order to acquire the Firehawk ability.

In the hands-off demonstration we saw that when Tyreen leeches someone, they become a husk and die.

So, it looks like Lillith may have died early on at the hands of Tyreen. Gearbox isn’t confirming anything when it comes to this and instead says;

How she got this ability may be implied but we’ll need to wait to play the game for those details.

End of Spoilers

The Calypso Twins are certainly looking like they’re going to be causing all sorts of trouble for the Vault Hunters. With Tyreen’s abilities and their army of followers, taking them down is going to be a big job.

Thankfully, the Crimson Raiders have the Vault Hunters on their side.

Stay tuned for more on The Calypso Twins and Borderlands 3.
