Midnight Suns – Deadpool DLC Review (PC) – Good but not weird enough

I’m a big fan of Marvel’s Midnight Suns, so I jumped at the chance to get my hands on the Deadpool a little early. The Merc with the Mouth has really become a bit of a global sensation in the last few years, thanks to Ryan Reynolds so I was looking forward to some wise-cracking, fourth-wall-breaking weirdness.

And I got it, to a certain extent. I really like the Deadpool DLC but I just don’t think it’s weird enough. Yes, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall and knows he’s in a game but he seems quite tame and pared back. Nolan North does a great job providing the voice, it just all feels…restrained.

Along with Deadpool comes a handful of new story missions and some new spooky Vampyre enemies, though just as the arc gets going, things wrap up. Hopefully, there’s more to come in the future.

Midnight Suns Deadpool

The Hunter meets Deadpool on a mission to infiltrate a Hydra operation and find out why they’re stealing art. Things go awry and Deadpool becomes a de facto member of the Midnight Suns. We learn who he’s working for (no spoilers) and Blade begrudgingly accepts Deadpools help to stop a Vampyre crime spree. Although I played it after I’d finished the main story, Deadpool’s arc can fit in anywhere and it’s a fun little diversion even if it is rather short.

In addition to the story missions, Vampyres and their ilk will also appear in missions on the Mirror Table and come with some cool new mechanics. If you’re damaged by a Vampyre, there’s a chance they’ll add a bleed effect to one of your cards. When you play that card, you’ll gain 1 bleed. On harder difficulties, it’s easy to quickly become overwhelmed and lose way too much health to Bleed. Deadpool has his own special ability; En Fuego. When Deadpool gets a KO his En Fuego meter goes up and augments some of his abilities. En Fuego also stacks.

For example, Pain Pinata deals damage to enemies in an area. For each En Fuego, the area is increased by 25%. En Fuego does have a downside though. When Deadpool is damaged by an enemy, he loses one En Fuego and all enhancements it provides until he can replace it. If Deadpool is in your roster you need heroes who can taunt and tank to let him build up his meter and unleash devastating combos.

Deadpool also brings his Food Truck to the Abbey which allows heroes to discard a card in exchange for 1 Move. I didn’t find it super useful, but it doesn’t fully suit my playstyle. I’m sure there are players who will absolutely love it too.

Overall, the Deadpool DLC for Midnight Suns is fun, silly and a great addition to the game. I would have liked it to go for a little longer and for Deadpool to be really let loose but I suppose he had to mostly fit the tone of Midnight Suns even when breaking the fourth wall and being a loose cannon. Having a new hero is also a lot of fun as you get to try a huge number of combos and see which heroes work best.

For me, in honour of Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, I mostly stuck with Wolverine and Deadpool.
