In the newly released gameplay trailer for Mafia: Definitive Edition, we’re briefly shown footage from both the original and remade games. Just before the trailer shows off some gameplay from a mission, it shows some clips from the infamous racing mission.
If you’ve never played the original, shame on you. But also, lucky you because you never had to endure the ‘Racing Mission.’ Easily the most difficult mission in the entire game, it saw you have to win a race in a vehicle that controlled worse than a shopping trolley with only two wheels.
In 2010, Mafia II Senior Producer Denby Grace spoke to The Escapist and explained why the mission was so hard. Turns out the devs all had race wheels at their desks and were building the mission as a proper racing game.
Mafia Race Car Mission
It’s been well documented just how difficult the original mission is and how many players simply gave up trying. Some used cheats, others downloaded a patch or save files to skip the mission and others seemingly gave up on the game altogether. In 2002 I was 17 years old and I distinctly remember being childishly excited by the sex scene and raging for hours on end, trying to finish the damn racing mission.
From what we’ve seen from the trailer, it’s impossible to tell if the mission has been improved but given the game is a complete remake, we can only hope Hangar 13 has fixed it.
Please, for the love of God Hangar 13, tell us you fixed the racing mission.
Mafia: Definitive Edition launches for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on September 25, 2020.
