In addition to the incredible new trailer, released during the Night City Wire, CD Projekt Red also announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. A collaboration between the Polish developer, Studio Trigger in Japan and Netflix, Edgerunners is an anime set in Night City, launching in 2022.
In a trailer for the series, which shows nothing of the show itself, Saya Elder, the Japan based producer for the series, introduces the concept and ethos of Edgerunners. While it’s set in Night City, it features all-new characters and an all-new story.
The trailer features a lot of footage of Nakano, Tokyo, which is an anime mecca and includes Nakano Broadway.
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
Elder introduces Studio Trigger, which anime fans will recognise as the animation house responsible for Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia. Studio Trigger was founded by former Gainax employees including director of Edgerunners, Imaishi Hiroyuki, who also worked on Neon Genesis Evangelion.
Other studio members include;
Otsuka Masahiko (Gurren Lagann, Promare) Wakabayashi Hiromi (Kill la Kill), Yoshinari Yoh ( Little Witch Academia, BNA: Brand New Animal) Kaneko Yuto (Little Witch Academia), Usa Yoshiki (S SSS.GRIDMAN, Promare) and Otsuka Masahiko (Gurren Lagann, Kill la Kill, Promare).
Adam Badowski, Cyberpunk 2077 Game Director and CD PROJEKT RED Head of Studio said, “We’ve devoured just about all the cyberpunk fiction there is to watch, read, and play; it’s a genre that leaves so much room for creativity and has had such a strong influence on us. CYBERPUNK: EDGERUNNERS is our love letter to cyberpunk as a whole, and to stories told in animated form”
Imaishi said, “I’ve always loved cyberpunk as a genre, but always found it difficult to create as an original work. This is why I’m very excited to be working with CD PROJEKT RED on this project. It won’t be easy to please both game and anime fans, but I love a challenge, and I’m looking forward to the production. We’ll do our best to meet and exceed expectations.”
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners will stream on Netflix in 2022.
