Ah, the dog days of summer. What to do with yourself? With a global pandemic raging and social distancing “all the rage” it might be best to stay in for a bit. And there’s no better way to stay in than with this year’s best new video games for company.

We’re truly in a video game golden age. The stories have never been deeper, the graphics have never been more vibrant, and the worlds have never been more open. The gaming console giants are running wild this year and VR is poised to strike. So let’s see what Summer 2020 has in store for us.

Before we get into it…

Once you’ve passed the final levels, beaten the games, and your heartbeat has returned to its normal rhythm, you may be wondering what to do next?

We recommend amping up your gameplay by adding some serious cash to the mix. Get your adrenaline pumping by playing video game-themed slots at online casinos. Your favourite characters, places, and storylines are all there. And here’s the kicker: not only can you win in these games, but you could seriously win big.

1. Half-Life: Alyx

Half-Life: Alyx is a new VR instalment in Valve’s sidelined first-person shooter series. A prequel to Half-Life: 2, this game features Alyx as the protagonist. The daughter of Gordon Freeman’s former colleague takes centre stage as a member of the Anti-Combine resistance who discovers a secret Combine superweapon and deeper secrets to boot.

A different level of submersion

Enter the decaying urban dystopia of City 17, a fictitious Eastern European metropolis that has more hostile inhabitants than you can shake a stick at. Chuckle along with Russel, the cheerful inventor who’s constantly whispering in your ear as you explore this beautiful, full-fledged game that truly expands the Half-Life universe.

Half-Life: Alyx was released on March 23, 2020, for Windows PC with a compatible VR headset. So I guess the only question now is: When will Half-Life 3 ever come out?

2. DOOM Eternal

The end of the world is here, and it looks like a hell of a lot of fun.

In the stranger-than-fiction world, we’re now living in, DOOM Eternal offers a fitting escape from an Earth in crisis to another, but at least you have control over your actions in the video gameverse. New horrors await in this bloody, bullet-filled reboot… and Doomguy looks ready.

Enter a world of vivid graphics, perplexing puzzles, and gratuitous violence as the underworld opens up to release a shocking pantheon of demonic beasties for you to deal with. Reload, watch your ammo and get to it.

The inevitable sequel to the wildly popular 2016 reboot of DOOM is available on PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch in March 2020 for its eager fans.

3. Cyberpunk 2077

From the creators of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt developer CD Projekt RED, comes an epic sci-fi saga about hackers, sleazy criminals, and belligerent corporations.

Yip its Neo

With so much story to tell and so much Keanu Reeves to pack in the original release date of April 16 got pushed back to allow for a perfectly polished finished product. Cyberpunk 2077 will release on September 17, 2020 for PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Google Stadia. On PC, it’ll be on Steam and GOG.

4. Final Fantasy VII Remake

The fans called and SQUARE ENIX answered. Coming in April 2020 for PS4, the Final Fantasy VII Remake that players hoped for is now a reality. I dare you to watch the trailer and not get choked up with nostalgia and its remarkably dramatic storyline. I’m not crying, you’re crying.

For many gamers, Final Fantasy was the first time a narrative story in a video game brought players to tears with emotional moments, an epic soundtrack, and an unforgettable connection to the characters. This seminal RPG (role-playing game) remake looks like a feature film and promises to amaze, astound, and awe in a way only Final Fantasy can.

5. Marvel’s Iron Man VR: Gone Gold

Strap in and get ready to fly and fight like you’ve always wanted to in the iconic suit of Iron Man, Tony Stark. The road to virtual reality has been a bumpy one but Gone Gold is an experience you’re not going to want to miss.

Marvel, Sony, and developers Camouflaj have teamed up to create the most immersive Iron Man adventure possible with you in the driver’s seat.

If you’re thinking this is just another silly VR sandbox demo, you better think again. This is a fully fleshed-out complete game with a flowing storyline, a world of unlockables, lifelike graphics, and coherent upgrade progressions. And the best part? You can fly. Anywhere. There’s no chance of being railroaded in this game. You can fly wherever you can see… which is pretty much anywhere.

Need more before it arrives? Be sure to check out the demo to get even more amped up. Suit up and get in line because Iron Man VR: Gone Gold releases exclusively for PlayStation VR on July 3.
