Godzilla and friends are coming to Magic: The Gathering in upcoming set

Wizards of the Coast and TOHO have announced a partnership that will see Godzilla and 15 other Kaiju become part of Magic: The Gathering. In the upcoming Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set, The King of the Monsters officially joins Magic: The Gathering in what might be the wildest expansion yet.

Ikoria: Lair of the Behemoths is Spring 2020’s “premier card for” and introduces a new world “full of incredible monsters and the humans that bond with them.” In addition to the Kaiju, this set also introduces “Lukka, a proud member of the Coppercoats, the military unit that protects the city of Drannith from Ikoria’s savage monsters.”

In the lore for the set, Lukka forges a bond with a winged cat and as such bonds are treasonous he is forced to flee from the home he swore to protect.

With the assistance of Planeswalker Vivien Reid, Lukka seeks to survive in the wilds of Ikoria and live alongside the monsters. These monsters are the Kaiju we’ve grown to love and recognise and each of the Godzilla Monster Series cards includes a monster from the Godzilla Pantheon.

There are a total of 16 in English and three others exclusively in Japanese.

  • Anguirus, Armored Killer
  • Babygodzilla, Ruin Reborn
  • Biollante, Plant Beast Form
  • Bio-Quartz Spacegodzilla
  • Destoroyah, Perfect Lifeform
  • Dorat, the Perfect Pet
  • Ghidorah, King of the Cosmos
  • Gigan, Cyberclaw Terror
  • Godzilla, Doom Inevitable
  • Godzilla, King of the Monsters
  • Godzilla, Primeval Champion
  • King Caesar, Ancient Guardian
  • King Caesar, Awoken Titan
  • Mothra, Supersonic Queen
  • Rodan, Titan of Winged Fury

To get your hands on Godzilla, you’ll have to purchase a draft booster pack display through a Wizards Play Network store.

Each sealed draft booster pack display will contain a random Godzilla Series Monster card. Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths Collector Boosters will also contain two random Godzilla Series Monster cards. The Godzilla Series Monster cards will not appear in draft booster packs.

The Godzilla Monster cars will appear in Magic: The Gathering as card styles and players will receive card styles as a bonus when purchasing six or more booster packs inside the Magic: The Gathering client.

The Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths set launches on April 16, 2020 on Arena and in-store on May 15, 2020.
