Watch a comparison of SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom footage with the original

Recently I went hands-on with SpongeBob Rehydrated and found it to be a charming, colourful affair. Even though I’d never played the original game, after playing the first level of the remake, my interest was piqued. So I tracked down a copy and played through Jellyfish Fields. What was clear, after playing, is that Purple Lamp Studios has worked hard to make SpongeBob Rehydrated modern, visually great and an improvement on the original.

I was able to capture my playthrough of the remake as well as the original and I’ve spliced them together so you can watch and compare the visuals and the gameplay.

You can clearly see, just how much work has gone into the visuals and while it’s harder to see how differently playing the game feels, you should get some idea of the improvements that have been made.

Check out the comparison footage above and you’ll see just how much better the remake looks, how much more colourful it is and how it updates this game from 2003 for 2020.

SpongeBob Rehydrated does not yet have a release date, but it’s scheduled to be released in 2020.

It will be available for PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One.
