Bayonetta 10th Anniversary Edition Review (PS4) – Back Again

Here I am, reviewing Bayonetta again. Last time, I was reviewing its re-release on the Switch alongside Bayonetta 2. Now, it’s time for Bayonetta 10th Anniversary’s release on PS4. It’s hard to believe that Bayonetta is 10 years old and it’s even harder to believe that this is a franchise that’s now exclusive to Nintendo.

Anyway, I digress.

Bayonetta 10th Anniversary Edition is a chance for PlayStation players to FINALLY play this game. The PS3 release of the original was an infamously bad port with atrocious framerate issues, screen tearing and a litany of other problems.

However, this version removes all of those issues and includes remastered 4K resolution and 60fps on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X.

Bayonetta 10th Anniversary Edition Review

If you don’t know what Bayonetta is, basically, it’s a stylish action game in the vein of Devil May Cry. It’s not surprising that it was created by Kamiya Hideki after moving on from Capcom. Just like the Switch version, the 10th Anniversary Edition looks good, but not great.

The 4K resolution and rock-solid 60fps make Bayonetta a dream to play, though the visuals have definitely dated.

What truly makes Bayonetta still so good is the gameplay. As it was when it was released, playing Bayonetta in 2020 is fast, frantic and tense. It’s the absolute tippy-top of stylish combat, despite being superseded by Bayonetta 2. However, as that is exclusive to Nintendo, this is the next best thing.

Possibly the biggest selling point of this re-release is playing in 4K and at 60fps. Even though the visuals have dated, playing on PS4 Pro and a 4K TV was a seriously incredible experience. It’s hard to even describe the speed and finesse at which Bayonetta moves on screen. Combined with the effects, splashes of colour and insane action, Bayonetta is a game that really has to be played to be believed.

It may be 10 years old and it may be a re-re-release, but this 10th Anniversary Edition is definitely a must-play. Especially if you’ve only ever been a PlayStation player and never got to experience it at its best.

Do yourself a favour and play this before you dive into Bayonetta 3 when it eventually releases on Switch.

Bayonetta 10th Anniversary Edition was reviewed on PS4 Pro using a digital copy provided by SEGA.
