Mayhem 2.0 is coming to Borderlands 3 in April

Get ready for even more mayhem when Mayhem 2.0 launches for Borderlands 3 in April. The revamped Mayhem mode will come to the game alongside the seasonal event Revenge of the Cartels. The new mode “will overhaul Borderlands 3’s end-game by reinventing the ways in which Mayhem modifiers work.

We spoke to Anthony Nicholson, Gearbox’s Head of DLC Production who gave us some insight into how Mayhem 2.0 will work. He says that players will be able to see and adjust their modifiers more cleanly for a start.

“Right now whenever you load into a map you hit it and see what it is,” he explained. “If you want to quote-unquote reroll your modifiers, you have to leave the map and come back.”

In Mayhem 2.0, Gearbox is working to make it so players can get the modifiers they want and they enjoy and are clearly displayed.

In addition to gameplay modifiers that change how you play, Nicholson says that Gearbox is also adding “goofy stuff too” like Big Head Mode. With the new system, players will have the ability to tailor and customise their Mayhem experience more easily and more cleanly and can play across the four levels of Mayhem that exist in the game already.

Funnily enough, Nicholson told me that Gearbox never intended to include Mayhem Four in Borderlands 3 and it only came about because of how much players were playing Mayhem Three.

It was this that led to the team looking at Mayhem and deciding to implement Mayhem 2.0. In the interim though, they added Mayhem Four as a way for players to get even more out of Borderlands 3’s end game.

After Mayhem 2.0 launches in April, Gearbox is adding the second Takedown to Borderlands 3 in May. The Guardian Takedown “will offer some of the most challenging content in the game.”

This intense standalone mission will be themed after the mysterious Eridians and will feature not only new bosses but new gear and cosmetics as well. The difficulty will scale to the size of the player party by default. However, if you want to experience the Takedown in its true form, you can select “True Takedown Mode,” which tunes the difficulty for a party of four fully leveled-up Vault Hunters regardless of party size.

Gearbox has promised additional details on Mayhem 2.0, Revenge of the Cartels and The Guardian Takedown before they launch.

Guns, Love & Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainright and Hammerlock is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on March 26, 2020.
