The focus of Guns, Love & Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainright and Hammerlock might be on the titular marriage but Gearbox hasn’t included ‘tentacles’ just for fun. The icy planet of Xylourgos’ conditions are not favourable but one small, decrepit village remains; Cursehaven. Built beneath the “colossal carcass of a fallen Vault Monster,” Cursehaven is home to odd and eerie townsfolk with “disturbing and occasionally daft backstories.”
Cursehaven is also the location that Wainright and Hammerlock have chosen for their party guests to meet. It’s here that players will be able to take a break from the main story and delve deeper into the history of Cursehaven and its inhabitants.
Gearbox says that the side missions in this DLC are “spine-tingling” though stopped short of likening them to a noir or detective story.
Borderlands 3 DLC Side Missions
Ahead of the announcement of the DLC at PAX East, I spoke to Anthony Nicholson, Gearbox’s Head of DLC Production about the town of Cursehaven, its inhabitants and the side missions. When I asked if there was a noir vibe to these side missions he explained that it was not really noir and more of a journey of discovery.
What happened to this town, why are these people acting so weird? Something seems off.
Something’s amiss.
Then you interact with these different echo logs and they’re kind of telling you the story of, ‘Oh, there’s this thing that happened and that is why the townsfolk are acting this way.
These Borderlands 3 DLC side missions also tie into the main story of the DLC too. The town of Cursehaven has been infiltrated by the cultists who worship the dead Vault Monster and who are trying to stop the wedding. Clearly, something very strange has happened in this town and these Borderlands 3 DLC side missions will flesh that out.
The town of Cursehaven itself has been designed to feel occupied and populated. Nicholson said that there are a bunch of “generic NPCs walking around like on Sanctuary III” as well as mission givers, enemies and the main characters.
So, even though Cursehaven is a creepy, cultist filled place that’s not safe, it’s got life for you to explore and a history for you to discover.
Find out more about Cursehaven when Guns, Love & Tentacles: The Marriage of Wainright and Hammerlock comes to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on March 26, 2020.
