Director Cary Joji Fukunaga on No Time to Die and James Bond

No Time to Die is the 25th film in the James Bond franchise and the fifth and final time that Daniel Craig will play the titular Bond. Directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga, of True Detective fame, No Time to Die is designed as a way to find out who James Bond is. As Fukunaga says, “As a writer and director, it was essential to rediscover Bond.” In No Time to Die, Bond has been retired for five years and fans will get to see the man he has become.

A brand-new behind-the-scenes featurette, has Fukunaga explaining his take on Bond; both the character and the franchise.

Bond has left active service and is enjoying a tranquil life in Jamaica. His peace is short-lived when his old friend Felix Leiter from the CIA turns up asking for help. The mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist turns out to be far more treacherous than expected, leading Bond onto the trail of a mysterious villain armed with dangerous new technology.

Fukunaga calls him a “wounded animal” and a man out of his depth and in a world he no longer understands.

No Time to Die

In the featurette, Fukunaga explains what he believes are Bond’s motivations and his weaknesses, especially when it comes to new enemy Safin (Rami Malek).

James Bond. License to kill. History of violence…I could be speaking to my own reflection. Only your skills die with your body. Mine will survive long after I’m gone…James Bond. I’ve made you redundant…

Fukunaga says that No Time to Die is a race “from the moment [Bond’s] called to action, until the end of the film.” The target of No Time to Die is to give Bond his most challenging and most difficult mission ever.

Check out what Fukunaga has to say in the video above.
