Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt star in Disney’s Jungle Cruise

Remember when Pirates of the Caribbean was just an amusement park ride and not a multi-billion dollar film franchise? Yeah, me neither. When the first film was announced, fans scoffed at the idea of a film based on a ride but it was a hit. Sure, the sequels have gotten progressively worse and the charm of Jack Sparrow has all but vanished but that first movie was great.

Now, Disney is hoping to succeed again with Jungle Cruise.

Starring Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt, Jungle Cruise is ‘inspired’ by the Disneyland Ride.

Jungle Cruise

Set in the Amazon, Jungle Cruise sees Johnson’s riverboat captain and Blunt’s explorer teaming up to reach the Tree of Life before a rival expedition. The film also stars Edgar Ramirez, Jack Whitehall, with Jesse Plemons, and Paul Giamatti.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra (House of Wax, The Commuter) Jungle Cruise has been a long-gestating project for Disney. Originally announced in 2006, in 2011 it was re-announced with Tom Hanks and Tim Allen billed to star.

Then in 2015, Disney revealed that it was moving forward with the project with Johnson. Now, it will finally release in cinemas on July 23, 2020.

Check out the trailer above and see if you think it can be as big a success as Pirates.
