Cyberpunk 2077 might add co-op after launch

CD Projekt Red’s Krakow Studio Head John Mamais was in Melbourne for PAX Australia and took time out to chat to PowerUp! about Cyberpunk 2077. In early September, the developer confirmed (via Twitter) that a multiplayer component would be added to Cyberpunk 2077 sometime after launch.

While the Twitter announcement mentioned that there will be DLC and free single-player content and “multiplayer action” CD Projekt Red has not been forthcoming with any details.

While chatting with Mamais I broached the topic of multiplayer with him, especially the idea of co-op.

Cyberpunk 2077 Co-op

With the announcement so recent, I asked Mamais if CD Projekt Red has any vision or description of what the multiplayer is going to look like and he simply told me, “Nope.”

However, he did elaborate and say;

That’s going to be a big announcement, if and when we do it like that, so it’s not something I can reveal at conference like this.

Asking him about if there are any plans for co-op Mamais didn’t say no. Instead, he replied, “That’s multiplayer too, that’s the same topic” and wouldn’t elaborate any further. He then asked me what I’d like to see as a multiplayer mode in the game as if to move me even more hurriedly away from the topic of co-op.

In sad news for fans though, Mamais did confirm that neither studio is currently touching multiplayer in any form. He said that with 400 people working on the single-player game, CD Projekt Red isn’t diluting that work and effort.

A lot of people are scared that you tack on multiplayer and it kind of sucks and they as ‘why would you do that?’

Single player is more the purest way of playing. And that’s how we think in the studio too. Right? So there’s no risk of that shit [tacked on multiplayer] happening.

So, while Mamais didn’t confirm co-op, he certainly didn’t shut the question down like he did when I asked about multiplayer, despite calling them the same thing. While Cyberpunk 2077 is played from the first-person perspective, it’s an RPG at its core and basing a standard PvP mode on the gameplay might not work. So, if you are planning to buy Cyberpunk 2077, keep this in mind

A co-op mode, however, now that’s something I’d be keen to see. To learn more about crafting in the game, click here.

Cyberpunk 2077 is launching for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on April 16, 2020.
