Netflix teamed up with Twitch streamers to promote the new film Bird Box

Earlier this week, a strange parcel arrived on my doorstep. Inside was a sturdy Pelican Case and inside that was an odd collection of items.

The items inside the Pelican Case were;

  • A pair of Walkie Talkies
  • A blindfold
  • A bicycle bell
  • Fishing Line
  • Chocolate Pop-Tarts

Initially, I was incredibly confused, but as I discovered, the box was promoting Sandra Bullock’s Netflix film Bird Box. So why on earth had it been sent to me, a lowly gamer?

Turns out, Netflix had partnered with some Aussie streamers to promote the film in a pretty interesting way.

Bird Box Netflix

To understand why Netflix was promoting Bird Box this way, you need to understand a little about the movie. The synopsis reads;

When a mysterious force decimates the population, only one thing is certain — if you see it, you die. The survivors must now avoid coming face to face with an entity that takes the form of their worst fears.

After a mysterious force drives most of society to suicide, Malorie and her young children set out on a terrifying journey.

Thus, in Bird Box on Netflix, the characters need to wear blindfolds in order to survive. It’s kind of like A Quiet Place only with vision instead of hearing.

In order to promote the film, Netflix challenged four streamers to “survive their favourite game” while blindfolded. The four streamers and their games were;

While the streams have already taken place, you can check them out at each of the streamers Twitch channels.

Netflix is encouraging all gamers to try their hand at the Bird Box challenge and all you’ll need are the items listed above, sans Pop-Tarts. The idea is that you play your favourite game and try to make it through a section, blindfolded, on muscle memory, communication with a friend and your hearing.

Good luck!

Bird Box is releasing on Netflix on December 21.
