With the announcement of Joker as a DLC fighter in Super Smash Bros Ultimate, it’s made me think about other characters I’d love to see in the game.
After the announcement, Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime said “This gives you a flavour of how we’re approaching the DLC. There’s going to be five characters. Each character will come with a stage. It’ll [also] come with a collection of music.
“These are characters that are new to the series… characters that you would not anticipate to be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.”
What Fils-Aime said can give us some clues about the type of characters are going to be included in the Fighters Pass. So let’s take a look at some that could be included and the ones we hope are.
Smash Bros Ultimate DLC Fighters
Beginning in Smash Bros Brawl, Nintendo started to include 3rd party characters in the series. Sonic and Solid Snake were included on Brawl and both were popular choices.
Sonic has been a series mainstay ever since and even received an amiibo when Smash Bros 4 was released. Snake has been absent from the series until Ultimate and has made a return.
Alongside Snake’s return, Smash Bros Ultimate features every character to ever appear in the franchise and some new additions; Simon Belmont, Ken, Inkling, Richter, Chrom, King K. Rool, Ridley and more.
Joker is the most recent announcement and one of the most left-field announcements yet for Super Smash Bros. In that vein, let’s take a look at some others.
Banjo & Kazooie
This one is a no-brainer really. The bear and the bird first appeared on N64 and were included in Diddy Kong Racing, Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo-Tooie, Banjo Pilot and Grunty’s Revenge.
Despite Rare’s purchase by Microsoft, Banjo and Kazooie are still fondly remembered for their Nintendo outings. While their games have been re-released on other platforms, in recent times, co-operation has been the order of the day.
Nintendo and Microsoft’s relationship has been rather chummy of late. With cross-play happening more and more between the two platforms, now couldn’t be a better time for Microsoft to allow Nintendo to use Banjo and Kazooie in Smash Bros Ultimate.
Plus, you know everyone would go absolutely insane for it.
Tracer
Overwatch is a phenomenon, there’s no denying it. While it doesn’t have an official mascot, Tracer appears in most of the game’s promotional material.
She’s on the cover for god’s sake.
In any case, Tracer is a hugely recognisable and popular character from a hugely recognisable and popular game. It makes sense to include a character for Overwatch as they suit the visual and gameplay style of Smash Bros.
The use of various abilities and moves totally fits in with Smash Bros and Blizzard and Nintendo have started to redevelop a professional relationship after many years.
Diablo 3 has been released on Switch and now would be a great time to push the relationship forward.
Sephiroth
Sephiroth is one of, if not the most, popular and recognisable characters from the Final Fantasy series. He has appeared in multiple games beyond his appearance in Final Fantasy VII, even appearing in both LittleBigPlanet 1 and 2.
Sephiroth is one of the most wanted characters by fans of the series and has been a popular theorised character for years. When Cloud was announced for Smash Bros 4, his reveal trailer included references to Sephiroth so it’s been hoped he would appear since then.
With Cloud returning in Smash Bros Ultimate, the addition of Sephiroth would be perfection especially given Final Fantasy VII Remake is due for release next year.
Crash Bandicoot
Crash Bandicoot was PlayStation’s first proper mascot. However, he’s long been the property of Activision and until recently was dormant.
Thankfully, Crash N. Sane Trilogy was a great remake of his first three games and it was released on Switch. Additionally, Crash Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is being released in June 2019 and will also see a release on Switch.
This means that, although he’s not really been active until the last year or so, one of video games’ biggest mascots has the potential to appear in the greatest character crossover ever.
Crash is a perfect fit for Smash Bros and would be a great addition to Ultimate.
Fortnite Girl/Guy
Fortnite is the biggest game in the world right now. With over 125 million players worldwide and release on PC, PS4, Mobile, Switch and Xbox One, Fortnite is hot property right now.
Adding a Fortnite character to Smash Bros would have broad appeal, as well as introducing another character that could sport multiple looks, costumes and skins.
A Fortnite character’s moveset would also fit pretty well within Smash Bros and could conceivably include building, pickaxe melee, guns, grenades and more. I’m sure hardcore fans would scoff at the inclusion of a Fortnite character, but we all know it would be a perfect fit.
Honourable Mentions
Other characters I’d love to see included are;
- Tails
- Rash, Zit and Pimple
- Master Chief
- Ratchet & Clank
- Spider-man
- Cuphead

- James Bond
- Sora
- Batman
Here’s hoping we won’t have to wait too long to find out who’s going to be included in Smash Bros Ultimate.
