Blizzard announces the 2018 Overwatch World Cup

Blizzard has today announced the 2018 Overwatch World Cup. The World Cup first debuted in 2017 and in the past two-years it has expanded and grown into a global phenomenon.

The 2018 Overwatch World Cup commences today — March 28, 2018 — and culminates in a final event and celebration in Southern California this November.

So how will this year’s World Cup work?

Blizzard has laid out a handy roadmap (above) and also provided a detailed explanation of how the competition will work. From today, through to the end of Season 9 of competitive play, Blizzard will track the average SR of the top 150 players from each country.

The top 20 countries at the end of Season 9 will be invited to compete in the 2018 Overwatch World Cup. To view the current standings head to the official website.

At the time of writing, China is in first place, closely followed by Sweden, the UK, Canada and Germany. The four host countries are automatically entered into the competition and in the 2018 World Cup they are South Korea, United States, Thailand and France.

Australia is currently in 15th place. In last year’s Overwatch World Cup, Australia finished in the top eight, so let’s hope we can do it again.
