Skyrim Switch Guide – How to unlock Zelda items without amiibo

Skyrim is now available on Switch and it contains a special treat for Nintendo fans. Three The Legend of Zelda themed items — Heroes Clothes, Hylian Shield and Master Sword — can be unlocked using amiibo. What if you don’t have amiibo though?

Can you still unlock the Zelda items? Thankfully, the answer is yes. Here’s how.

How to unlock Zelda items without amiibo

As part of the main quest, you’ll have to visit the Greybeards at High Hrothgar on the Throat of the World. The Greybeards will help you learn and develop your skills with Dragon Shouts. They also promise to introduce you to their leader, Paarthurnax, once you’re ready.

Paarthurnax sits atop the Throat of the World, which just so happens to be where the chest containing the Zelda items is located. The path from High Hrothgar to the top of the Throat of the World is blocked by high winds. It’s inaccessible until much later in the game.

In Act II of Skyrim Esberm — who you’ll meet in Riften — will help you discover the source of the dragons in Skyrim. In order to stop them, you’ll need to go see Paarthurnax. Having the ‘Throat of the World’ quest in your log you’ll be able to learn the ‘Clear Skies’ shout from Arngeir.

Throat of the World

Once you’ve learned the ‘Clear Skies’ Shout, head outside to the High Hrothgar Courtyard. A fierce storm will be raging and you’ll find that it’s difficult to control your character.

Open the character menu and press left to select Magic. Scroll down to Shouts and choose ‘Clear Skies.’ It will be bound to R and once you press it the weather will clear.

Climb to the top of the Throat of the World by following the path up and eventually you’ll reach the top. Speak to Paarthurnax and once your conversation is over you’ll be able to open up the nearby chest to gain the Zelda items.

It might take a while longer, but you’re guaranteed to unlock all three of the special Zelda items using this method. If you don’t have any Zelda amiibo, it’s the only way you’ll be able to wander Skyrim with the Master Sword.

It certainly seems worth it to me.

Skyrim is available now on Switch.
