Pokémon GO Generation 2 Guide: Evolve Eevee into Espeon and Umbreon

Pokémon GO’s latest update has brought with it plenty of new Pokémon. Two new Pokémon that are easy to get are the Eevee evolutions; Espeon and Umbreon.

Pokémon GO players are aware that to force Eevee to evolve in Flareon, Jolteon or Vaporeon, the Pokémon nickname need to be set to Pyro, Sparky or Rainer. Naming your Eevee one of these names will ensure you get the ‘eeveelution’ you want. The trick only works once though and after you’ve used each name every evolution is random.

The naming trick is still used for the new evolutions in Generation 2. The update to Pokémon GO adds both Espeon and Umbreon to the Pokédex. Espeon is a Psychic type and Umbreon is Dark type.

Generation 2 Eeveelutions

To guarantee Eevee will evolve into Espeon change its name to ‘Sakura’

To guarantee Eevee will evolve into Umbreon change its name to ‘Tamao’

The names come from the Pokémon anime in which Sakura and Tamao are the names of two of the ‘Kimono Sisters‘ who own and train Eevees and their evolutions.

Like Generation 1, the naming trick will only work the first time you use it. Any time you evolve Eevee after the first use of renaming, the evolution will be random. Both of Eevee’s new evolutions will evolve at a high CP; though Espeon does seem to be the stronger of the two.

After evolving an Eevee of less than 500 CP with the nickname ‘Sakura’ I got an Espeon with 2154 CP. An Eevee of similar CP with the nickname ‘Tamao’ evolved into an Umbreon with 1249 CP.

All Eeveelutions

If you’re new to Pokémon GO below is a guide on how to guarantee each of Eevee’s five evolutions.

Flareon

To get a Flareon select the Eevee you’d like to evolve and change its nickname to Pyro.

Jolteon

To get a Jolteon select the Eevee you’d like to evolve and change its nickname to Sparky.

Vaporeon

To get a Vaporeon select the Eevee you’d like to evolve and change its nickname to Rainer.

Espeon

To get an Espeon select the Eevee you’d like to evolve and change its nickname to Sakura.

Umbreon

To get an Umbreon select the Eevee you’d like to evolve and change its nickname to Tamao.

Remember, naming your Eevee to guarantee an evolution will only work the first time and that naming an Eevee after that will have no effect on its evolution.
