Midnight Suns gameplay first look revealed; deep-dive coming next week

Firaxis, 2K and Marvel have given fans their first look at gameplay from the upcoming strategy/tactics game Midnight Suns today. The video introduces the player’s original character, Hunter as well as Dr Strange, Iron Man, Blade, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Caretaker, Captain America, Ghost Rider and more.

Playing as Hunter, the first customisable original hero in the Marvel Universe, Midnight Suns is from their perspective after being brought back from the dead after centuries. Hunter is charged with leading the Midnight Suns against Lilith, Mother of Demons.

This first gameplay video gives fans a tease at what’s to come in the game, with a promised follow-up and deeper look at gameplay taking place at 4.30 am, September 8 AEST.

When it airs, the stream will show Sabretooth fighting Hunter and Wolverine. Firaxis and 2K write, “To say that Wolverine and Sabretooth are sworn enemies doesn’t even begin to describe the depth of their hatred for one another. The regenerating mutant pair have been fighting and occasionally killing each other in comic books since the mid ’80s when, after sharing the cover of Power Pack #27, they clashed in Uncanny X-Men #212. “

Midnight Suns Gameplay

Today’s gameplay video, however, gave a brief overview of some of the systems in Midnight Suns and revealed the game will use card mechanics for abilities. Before battle, players are able to select up to three heroes to engage in combat and each of their abilities is represented through different cards. A unique set of cards is assigned to each hero and players have the ability to customise their character to suit their playstyle. Players will also be able to use cards to take advantage of the environment to shove, leap and smash their enemies.

Jake Solomon, Creative Director at Firaxis said;

In Marvel’s Midnight Suns, you aren’t learning how to fight or gradually grow stronger – you and your fellow heroes are already legends, and must combine everything in your arsenal to stop Lilith. Cards provide a new and refreshing way to approach tactics, allowing us to really go all-out in designing a combat system that makes every hero feel, look, and play differently.

Each day in Midnight Suns begins in the Abbey, the superteam’s secret base and last remaining refuge from Lilith. Played from a third-person perspective, players are able to freely roam the Abbey, speak with their fellow heroes and chat it up before heading out to wage war. By speaking to the likes of Iron Man, Captain America, Blade etc, Hunter is able to strengthen personal bonds and increase their friendships with the other heroes. By developing these friendships, players will be able to unlock powerful abilities for heroes and new functions in the Abbey.

Being a card-based system, there is concern that it could lead Midnight Suns down the microtransaction route, however, the official Twitter account was quick to quash any notion of MSX in Midnight Suns.

Midnight Suns is coming to PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One and Xbox Series S|X in March 2022.
