Overwatch on Switch won’t have cross-play at launch

Overwatch launching on Switch means that all of the major platforms of this generation can now play Blizzard’s hero shooter. Overwatch Legendary Edition launches on Switch in the game’s current form, up to date and ready to go. Nintendo and Microsoft have been co-operating a lot lately and already have several games you can play cross-platform. These include Minecraft, Paladins and Rocket League.

When Overwatch Legendary Edition was announced for Switch, we wondered whether cross-play would be available at launch.

We’ve been wondering about Overwatch cross-play since last year and thought that maybe, the Switch release would finally see us able to play Overwatch cross-platform.

Overwatch Switch Cross-Play

Unfortunately, there will be no cross-play when Overwatch launches on Switch.

We spoke to a Blizzard spokesperson who told us;

We’ve seen how compelling cross-system play can be for our community, and we’re excited about the potential.

There’s still a lot of work to do on both our side and the platforms’ side to determine whether this is something that makes sense for Overwatch, and we’re keeping an eye on how cross-play systems and technology develop.

There you have it. Overwatch on Switch won’t have cross-play at launch. However, Blizzard isn’t ruling it out entirely.

We’ll keep our fingers crossed.

Overwatch Legendary Edition will be available for Switch on October 16, 2019.
