Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold nearly a million more copies than the original

Nintendo must be very pleased with the performance of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. The original game released for Wii U, was the console’s best selling game with 8.44 million copies sold.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was released for Switch in April 2018, one month after the release of the Switch. Since then, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 9.22 million copies, putting it nearly one million ahead of the original.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales place it as the second best selling game on the Switch, behind Super Mario Odyssey.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Sales

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was the first Wii U title ported to the Switch and since its release, we have seen plenty more re-releases. These include;

  • Bayonetta 2
  • Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker
  • Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze
  • Hyrule Warriors

Judging by the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sales figures, re-releasing Wii U games on Switch is a solid idea. There are already 3 million more Switches in households than Wii Us and it has a much better reputation.

Players who didn’t own a Wii U or buy many games for it may be more likely to buy games for Switch since it’s a much better console and the portability is its strongest selling point.

If you could have any Wii U game re-released on Switch, what would it be?
