Sonic Mania has sold over 1 million copies worldwide

Sonic Mania was released in August 2017 as a celebration of Sonic’s 25th Anniversary. SEGA must be celebrating Sonic Mania sales today with news of how well it’s performed being revealed.

The game, developed by a team who’d worked on Fan versions of Sonic and ROM hacks. Sonic Mania was built using Australian developer Christian Whitehead’s Retro Engine.

Whitehead was previously contracted by SEGA to port Megadrive games to Mobile and brought his idea for Sonic Mania to SEGA.

Sonic Mania Sales

Since its release in August on PC, PS4, Switch and Xbox One, Sonic Mania sales have topped one million. Without a physical release, Sonic Mania sales reaching over 1 million for a digital-only title is very impressive.

A new version of Sonic Mania, Sonic Mania Plus, will be released in mid-2018 for PS4, Switch and Xbox One.

Sonic Mania Plus will be released both physically and digitally and should help push Sonic Mania sales even higher. Sonic Mania Plus will include the original game and the following extra content;

  • Mighty the Armadillo playable character
  • Ray the Flying Squirrel playable character
  • Encore Mode featuring remixed levels
  • Four-player competitive mode
  • Additional cutscenes
  • Recreation of the final boss from Knuckles’ Chaotix
  • 32-page art book – part of the physical version

Sonic Mania is available now.
