Nintendo announces two huge, free updates coming to Splatoon 2

Nintendo has announced that in November and December there will be Splatoon 2 free updates. The updates will add new stages, a new Salmon Run stage, clothes, hairstyles and more.

The first of the free updates will be available this week, launching November 24. It will include;

  • Four New Stages
  • A Salmon Run Stage
  • New Gear
  • Music from new in-game bands
  • New Hairstyles
  • Higher Level Caps
  • New amiibo functionality
  • The ability to swap gear without leaving the lobby

The four free stages will be gradually rolled out, as with previous additions. The first new stage, MakoMart, will be available to play on November 25. The three remaining new stages Shellendorf Institute, Walleye Warehouse and Arowana Mall will launch at a later date.

Salmon’s Run’s new stage, Salmonid Smokeyard, features two raised platforms with a wide gap in between. Players will need to work together to use the lift fans and cover all areas of the stage. All in all, 140 new pieces of gear will be added to Splatoon 2 in the free updates. They include shirts, shoes and headgear. Four new hairstyles will be added in addition to some new music and higher level caps.

Splatoon 2 Prestige

The new level caps will allow players to reach 99. Players will also be able to ‘prestige’ by talking to Judd and reset their level to 1.

The best and biggest addition to these Splatoon 2 free updates is the ability to swap gear in the lobby. This was sorely needed and is a welcome change. During Regular Battle, Ranked Battle and Splatfest Battle, players can simply change their equipped gear.

The second update will be launching in December and will add new game mode Clam Blitz. In Clam Blitz, players need to collect the clams scattered around the stage. Once collected, the clams will follow the player who will need to deposit them into a basket near the enemy team’s base. The baskets are protected by a barrier which can only be broken by a power clam. Power clams are awarded when a player collects 10 clams.

Players will need to think strategically about which clams are used to break the barriers and which are used to score points with.

Splatoon 2 is exclusive to Nintendo Switch.
