NBA 2K23 details its new MyCAREER mode featuring J. Cole

Visual Concepts and 2K have today outlined MyCAREER mode for NBA 2K23. Featuring hip-hop sensation J. Cole, it’s being labelled the “biggest and most involved story [Visual Concept’s] has ever created. Executive Producer Erick Boenisch told PowerUp! that players will be “experiencing an all-new journey centred around your MyPLAYER getting drafted into a city where the citizens were hoping to get a different player.”

Right off the bat (or ball?) players will be facing adversity and trying to convince the fans and the organisation that they’re right for the team. Of course, Boenisch told us players who just want to play ball can dive right in, but for those who’re in it for the story too, there’s a lot to see and do.

One of the big arcs players have access to is the cameo from J. Cole and Dreamville musicians Elite and Bas as well as delving into fashion for which Visual Concepts hired an actual designer for assistance.

NBA 2K23 MyCAREER

These forays into music and fashion are parts of the business experience of MyCAREER which Boenisch told us is “important for winning over The City.” If players start to play well enough and perform well enough in their business pursuits, they might start seeing fans wearing their jersey and embracing them as opposed to the initial disappointment.

J. Cole, in addition to playing a big role in the game, has been announced as the cover star for the NBA 2K23 DREAMER Edition. “NBA 2K has long been a place to discover new musical talent through their game and continues to be a gold standard for showcasing all things basketball culture,” said J. Cole. “It’s been an amazing journey to not only appear on a cover of this year’s game but to be part of the MyCAREER storyline, soundtrack and bring the DREAMER brand into NBA 2K. There’s also more to come, so watch out for all things Dreamville and DREAMER brand drops during Seasons and for Bas and Elite in this year’s MyCAREER story.”

MyCAREER in NBA 2K23 will also see some big names dropping in to provide guidance and mentorship. Boenisch mentioned Kevin Garnett, Zion Williamson, Kendrick Perkins and JJ Reddick will all appear in MyCAREER and will provide assistance to players. He also said their feedback evolves over time to reflect how you’re playing and performing in the game.

Finally, 2K and Visual Concepts have announced the soundtrack to NBA 2K23 will include;

  • “TITANIC (feat. Rich Brian)” by Jackson Wang
  • “Rucón” by Alemán
  • “West Like (feat. Kalan.FrFr)” by Destiny Rogers
