Modern Warfare won’t have a Season Pass, will give away free maps

A mainstay of Call of Duty, the mutiplayer Season Pass won’t be a part of Modern Warfare. This year’s Call of Duty will do away with the Season Pass in favour of releasing free maps and Modern Warfare DLC to all players.

As part of the push to “unite the community,” Infinity Ward has decided that a Season Pass isn’t the right way forward. Instead, the post-launch content will include free maps and live in-game events.

What Infinity Ward stops short of saying is how else Modern Warfare will be monetised.

Modern Warfare DLC

Call of Duty Season Passes have been very lucrative for publisher Activision, so removing them won’t have been a simple matter and there is bound to be something else in place to generate revenue. One possible example is Loot Boxes, but there are others.

For instance, with the introduction of live and timed events in-game, there are bound to be cosmetics, skins (both character and weapon) and more. As the announcement was light on Modern Warfare DLC news, it remains to be seen what will and won’t be included in the game.

It should be noted that Patrick Kelly, Creative Director and co-Studio Head, Infinity Ward said “we’re eliminating the traditional season pass, so that we can deliver more free maps and content as well as post-launch events to all players.”

While this means that the Season Pass won’t be implemented like we’re used to seeing, there is certainly going to be monetisation involved. It’s just more likely going to be focused on cosmetic and othert content and not gameplay.

Modern Warfare will be available on October 25.
