Battles in Outward require strategy and planning

In its third developer diary for upcoming survival RPG Outward, developer Nine Dots is keen to stress one thing; if you fail to prepare, you prepare to fail.

From my experience with Outward, I can attest to the truth of this statement. Outward is a really punishing game and preparation is key. As you progress in the game, you’ll gain access to magic, better weapons, traps and more, but in the beginning, well, you’re a pretty pathetic fighter.

In this developer diary, Nine Dots explains how Outward has been designed to put an emphasis on being careful, analysing your enemies and planning.

Outward Combat

In the video, Nine Dots explains its approach to Outward combat.

If you had to fight a monster that is ten times your weight, how would you approach the situation?

If you’re smart, you wouldn’t rush into it. You would devise a plan. This is how we approach combat in Outward

Not every combat is handled the same and it will be important to analyse every enemy to find a weakness you can exploit.

Outward combat takes a lot of inspiration from the Souls series and players will struggle to survive if they rush in. Combat in Outward is designed to be measured and calculated as your character isn’t a prophecised hero, but rather, a simple pleb. You’ll need to keep your wits about you in order to stay alive against even the smallest and weakest of enemies.

Trust me. I played it for hours and had my arse handed to me many, many times.

Check out the dev diary below for the full breakdown of combat.

Outward is coming to PC, PS4 and Xbox One on March 26, 2019.
