Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers announced for the Nintendo Switch

In a surprising development today Capcom announced that the first Capcom fighter to come to the Switch will in fact be a new entry in the 25 year old Street Fighter II series.

Titled Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers, the game is not a port of Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix but a brand new entry in the series, bringing new characters and new gameplay modes to the classic SFII formula.

Evil Ryu and Violent Ken will be USFII titular final challengers, bumping the roster’s total up to 19 fighters (including Akuma, of course). Evil Ryu has appeared in multiple SF titles such as the Street Fighter Alpha series and Ultra Street Fighter IV, however the Psycho-power infused Violent Ken’s only previous videogame appearance has been in SNK’s crossover fighter SvC: Chaos.

Capcom also announced that USFII will include new features such as being able to choose between Udon’s HD Remix art style and the classic pixel art style of the original Street Fighter II, as well as a new 2 vs 1 co-operative mode where two players can fight simultaneously against a CPU opponent.

While a new entry in the Street Fighter II series will make any fighting game fan take notice, the Switch’s unique portability offers the possibility of a true shared-screen Street Fighter experience that can be taken just about anywhere.

Further details such as a release date are absent so far, but Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono will be appearing on Nintendo Treehouse’s stream to share more details on the on-the-go arcade classic on January 13 (PDT).
