Switching to Occom helped Aussie Gamer Jason Souter say good bye to lag

Internet Service Provider Occom launched in Australia in 2016 and is, according to their info, “an award-winning Australian Internet Service Provider that believes the internet should be fast, reliable and hassle-free.”

For years, Aussies have struggled with subpar internet speeds. In 2024, we ranked 82nd globally, behind Oman and Czechia and just above Uzbekistan. For a first-world nation with a data-hungry population, 82nd is pretty pathetic.

Gamer and streamer Jason Souter felt the same and was struggling to make a sustainable income through gaming due to his ISP. Accoring to Jason, he streams 3-4 nights per week and has a bustling household with 5 kids who are all connected to the internet. The Brisbane family struggled with constant internet drop outs and sluggish speeds – sitting at 40mbps download and 20mbps upload across big name providers like Optus, Belong and TPG. Jason says getting help from customer service was just near impossible.”

Jason says his gaming career has gone to the next level now that he has switched to Occom with download speeds up to 920Mbps and upload speeds more than double what they were before. According to Occom, the real culprit when it comes to slow internet speeds is lag, which can lead to “choppy video calls, buffering streams and sluggish online gaming.”

Lag, or latency, is the time taken between when a user sends a request and the response to load or complete that request. Occom suggests the optimal latency is under 10ms, but anyone who games in Australia will have experienced much higher latency regularly.

Philip Luo, CEO of Occom, says, “Lag time is the invisible barrier that’s frustrating millions of Australian households every day. The demand for fast, low-latency internet is only growing, as Australians increasingly embrace AI, smart homes, streaming and cloud gaming. Latency is starting to bother more and more people in everyday households.”

The average Australian household — according to Occom — supports over 20 connected devices and consumes 433 gigabytes per month. By 2030, this is expected to rise to 44 devices and as connectivity becomes more crucial, the need for fast, low-latency internet is going to become greater.

Occom says of its service;

Occom has extremely low domestic latency consistently, reflecting the optimised efficiency and low congestion levels of its network. This performance is particularly advantageous for latency-sensitive applications such as online gaming, like League of Legends by Riot Games. According to Riot Games’ official Lag Report, Occom ranks #1 in all three key performance metrics (latency, packet loss, and jitter) across Sydney – Inner West Sydney – South West, Melbourne – Inner and Melbourne – South East.

Meanwhile, Occom adopts dedicated links and optimised routing for international connections. Compared with major telcos, Occom achieves over 40% lower latency and over 80% less packet loss when connecting to Asia (China). This means that, with Occom, whether users play World of Warcraft, CSGO, Honor of Kings or any other game, as long as the servers are in Asia (China), customers can enjoy a superior gaming experience.

Occom has some tips to help you reduce your lag too;

  1. Update or restart your modem
    • Using older modems or routers can limit speeds and stability so check yours is up to date. A regular reboot can also help. Turn off your modem/router for 20-30 seconds and turn it back on.
  2. Relocate your router
    • Your devices need to be able to make the most of your WiFi signal so consider moving your router if you’re struggling with performance. The best position for a modem/router is usually in the centre of the house and relatively high up. If you have a large home consider investing in a modem upgrade or a Mesh WiFi System.
  3. Managing Network Overload with a High-End Router
    • Sometimes there are simply too many devices connected to your network especially during peak times. A High-performance router is needed to handle more connections.
  4. Review your internet plan
    • Internet service providers may have different strategies to reduce latency so make sure you’re with a provider that shapes their traffic to smooth out load spikes. Occom is focused on ‘optimised routing’ to balance network performance.
  5. Scan and remove malware
    • Ensure your antivirus software is up to date on all your devices as a network worm could cause your entire network to perform sluggishly and look like it’s overloaded.
