Rumour – Resident Evil 3 Remake currently in development, release scheduled for 2020

Those pesky rumours about Resident Evil 3 Remake, like the B.O.W.s in the game, simply will not die. In February 2019, we reported on rumours from a Capcom insider that claimed Resident Evil 3 Remake is in development. Now, Spawn Wave has claimed to have information that the remake is in development and will be released in 2020.

Resident Evil 2 was released in 2019 so it does seem rather soon for another remake. However, the RE Engine is pretty powerful and quite well suited to remaking these old games. Additionally, after having cracked how to remake RE2, it could be argued or assumed that Capcom has the knowledge now to speed up the remake process for RE3.

Another thing that points to a sped-up development time for RE3 Remake is the inclusion of the new and improved Mr X in RE2. In the original game, Mr X appeared at predetermined intervals and once defeated, went away.

In the remake, he stalks the player around the RCPD building like Nemesis did to Jill in RE3.

Resident Evil 3 Remake

Capcom has said in the past that a Resident Evil 3 Remake may be possible if there’s enough demand. Part of the reason Resident Evil 2 was remade was due to fans being so keen. In an interview with Game Watch, Resident Evil 2 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said;

The reason why [Resident Evil 2] became a remake was because the fans continued to send a love call saying ‘I want you to make a remake’ for 21 year. If I hear that [there’s as much demand for [Resident Evil 3], I think that will be the starting point for us.”

Spawn Wave has a decent track record when it comes to rumours and leaks. He leaked Elden Ring before it even had a name and so some credence should definitely be lent to his reporting.

When it comes to announcing Resident Evil 3 Remake, Spawn Wave suggests that The Game Awards may be the best time. And we tend to agree.

Considering that RE2 did so well in 2019 and is one of the games nominated for Game of the Year, Resident Evil is going to have a big presence at the awards. There almost couldn’t be a better time to announce a new remake.

In our initial reporting in February, we covered a rumour that RE3 Remake would be released before Resident Evil 8. If RE3 Remake is coming in 2020, as is now rumoured, this holds true as Resident Evil 8 is still a ways off.
