Rumour: Google is working on a game streaming platform codenamed Yeti

Google may be working on entering the video game market if reports from insiders can be believed. Yeti is the rumoured codename for the project. Google Yeti game streaming platform is reportedly a device which would operate on a subscription-based model.

The Google Yet game streaming platform could potentially stream to Chromecast products or a potential Google developed console. Google Yeti game streaming wouldn’t be the first service to offer game streaming.

There have been and remains numerous services and platforms for gamers to stream games. Some are more successful than others, however, quality and reliability of internet connection remain big factors in a game streaming or cloud gaming service.

Cloud Gaming Services

At present, there are eight cloud gaming systems and 15 cloud gaming services available to gamers. The ones of note include PlayStation Now, GeForce Now and Remote Play for PlayStation.

These services and products are less desirable in regions of the world with slower internet speeds, Australia being a prime example.

PlayStation Now is currently only officially available in North America.

Google’s foray into gaming isn’t the company’s first steps inside consumers houses. The recently released Google Home is a beachhead onto the lucrative smart home market. It’s not even Google’s first dalliance with gaming.

In 2014 the tech giant was on the verge of acquiring Twitch for a cool billion dollars before the deal fell apart. Twitch was later snapped up by Amazon for $970 million USD.

It was also rumoured to be working on an Android-based console a few years ago, but nothing ever came of it.

Google Yeti Streaming Platform

According to sources close to the project, Google has tested Yeti both as a service streamed through ChromeCast and as a hardware console. The sources have also claimed that Yeti would use a proprietary controller developed internally by Google’s hardware team.

While initially envisioned to launch for holiday 2017, the Google Yeti game streaming platform was delayed for reasons unknown.

Those closest to the project have said that Yeti has been in development for close to two years. The Yeti team is said to include Mario Queiroz, VP of product management, and Majd Bakar, VP of engineering.

The Google Yeti game streaming platform may or may not exist as is rumoured, but you can bet that Google is interested in tapping into the gaming market.

We’ll bring you more news as we have it.
