Super Mario Odyssey – A 2D Section in Seaside Kingdom

In Super Mario Odyssey, players are able to find special, 2D sections. These special areas are located by travelling through pixellated green pipes. Once Mario has entered the pipe he will emerge on the other side looking every bit his 8-bit self.

These forced perspective sections are fun little throwbacks to Super Mario Bros. and a nice nod to where Mario has come from. During our hands-on preview with Super Mario Odyssey, we managed to find one of these special sections in Seaside Kingdom. You can watch us as play through it in the video above.

When entering a 2D section, the game totally transforms into Super Mario Bros. Mario can sprint, duck and slide exactly as he can in the NES version and all of the sound effects are taken straight from the old games. Surprisingly, the two styles gel well with each other and transitioning from 3D to 2D and back again is a lot of fun.

We can’t wait to get our hands on the full game and find all of Super Mario Odyssey’s 2D sections.

Super Mario Odyssey will be available for Switch on October 27, 2017.
