Overwatch World Cup 2017 is coming to Sydney, Australia

Blizzard announced today that the Overwatch World Cup is coming to Sydney in July. The group qualifier will take place from July 21 through July 23, 2017, and will be hosted at the Star Event Centre.

This event is the group stage qualifier for the 2017 Overwatch World Cup which is scheduled to take place at BlizzCon in November. Australia, currently ranked 13th, was represented by 100 of the nation’s best Overwatch players in the lead up to the qualifier.

Of the 32 qualified nations, Australia will face off against Sweden, Italy, and Portugal in Group C. The Sydney event will also host Group D; Finland, Japan, Spain, and Vietnam.

Taking on a round-robin format, the group qualifier will see the top two teams from each group advance to an elimination playoff. The playoff winners from each region will comprise the eight-team field at the finals.

Aside from Australia’s hosting of the group qualifier, other events will be held in Shangai, Katowice in Poland and Burbank.

Pre-sale registration for tickets to attend the event is now live. Tickets will go on sale to the general public through Ticketek from June 20. Tickets cost $60 AUD (plus booking fee) and grant access to all three days of the event. For those unable to attend, a livestream will be available to watch.

Blizzard is also promising international commentator talent, to be announced closer to the event.

For Australia to host such a huge event is a boon for the local esports scene.

Why not attend and cheer on our local heroes?
